Rules for marking of B&A

1.    Rules for marking of B&A

There are 3 rules necessary for the marking of B&A:

1.1.    Symbol of separate collection (crossed-container)
According to Article 12 of Decree 6 / 2009, all B&A should be labeled with this symbol, or when the size is too small, in the package itself.
1.2.  Chemical (s) Symbol (s) printed under the crossed- container.
B&A that contain heavy metals in its composition such as mercury, cadmium and lead exceeding the concentration limits set by the DL, need to have chemical symbol (s) thereof, and cover an area of at least a quarter the size of this symbol.
1.3.    Capacity (mAh).
Portable and automotive B&A should contain this labeling.

2.    What B&A requires cross-marking of container and chemical symbol?

ALL B&A, regardless of the concentrations of heavy metals, need to be labeled with the crossed- container.

With regards to heavy metals, B&A that need to have the corresponding chemical symbols are:
a)    Portable B&A

•    Button-cell with concentrations of mercury up to 20.000 ppm

Should be marked with the chemical symbol Hg, if the concentration of heavy metal is greater than 5 ppm (or 0.0005%)
Example:

CBHg

•    Portable batteries incorporated in:
Alarm systems and emergency, including emergency lighting
Medical devices
Cordless Power Tools

Should be marked with the chemical symbol Cd, if the concentration of mercury exceeds 20 ppm (or 0.0020%)
Example:

CBCd

•    All B&A portable lead in concentrations exceeding 40 ppm (or 0.0040%) must be marked with the symbol Pb.
Example:

CBPb

b)    Industrial B&A

There is a limit for the concentration of mercury, for this type of B&A, which can not exceed 5 ppm.
As the concentrations above this value are prohibited, it is not necessary to place chemical symbol.

However there are NO limits on the concentrations of cadmium and lead. It is therefore necessary that B&A of industrial type have the marking:

•    Cd, if the concentration is above 20 ppm (or 0.0020%)
•    Pb, if the concentration is above 40 ppm (0.0040%)

If there are cells with more than a heavy metal present in the composition and the concentration of which contemplates the placement of various chemical symbols, an example can be:

c)  Automotive B&A

The Decree Law does not give detailed information with regard to this type of B&A.
If there automotive B&A with more than a heavy metal present in the composition and the concentration of which contemplates the placement of various chemical symbols, an example can be:
