70 million EEE placed in Portugal during 2007
According to ANREEE’s data, during 2007, about 70 million electric and electronic equipments (EEE) were placed in Portuguese market. That corresponds to 177 thousand tons.
In evaluation with 2006, “the market grew significantly in 2007, in about 30 per cent in weights and units”, said ANREEE’s Executive Directive Rui Cabral.
“This positive growth concludes that alongside with rising of registered companies in ANREEE, there’s also an increasing of quantities (weights and units) in the market.
According to Rui Cabral’s opinion, “it is possible, for the first time, to have in Portugal a faithful picture of EE sector, based on activity reports of ANREEE’s registered companies”.
“Taking this results, we can conclude that are been placed in our national market, in average, about seven EEE per habitant per year, corresponding to 17, 6 kg per capita”.
The increasing of reported EEE is a clear sign of self responsibility from our Portuguese companies.
Through registration and activity reports in ANREEE, these companies are in the right path to accomplish with national Law and European Directive.
“However, there are still EEE producers that, for some reason, are not accomplishing with the obligation of registration”.
The EE register has great importance, because allows ANREEE to observe the real EE market dimensions. It is also the first step to assure that, at the end of the life cycle, an EEE may have proper environmental treatment.
According to WEEE directive, each Member-State must guarantee the valorisation, at least, of 4 kg of EEE waste per habitant per year.
Lightning equipment on top of the list
In Portugal, reported EEE were mainly lightning equipments (category 5), representing 31, 7 per cent of total units, followed by IT and telecommunication equipments (category 3) with 28,2 per cent and category 7 Toys, Leisure and Sports equipment with approximately 12,2 per cent of total units.
On the other hand, Medical devices represented only 0, 5 per cent (category 8) and Monitoring and Control Instruments (category 9) about 0, 6 per cent of total units.
During 1007, the categories with higher growth were category 7 and category 10.
